Govt announces senior citizen swimming program

A new study of drowning deaths in Australia has revealed older Australians account for 30 per cent of water deaths each year.

The Royal Lifesaving Society says the statistics are alarming and has launched a swimming program designed for the over 55's, with the aim of improving water safety and lifesaving skills.

Minister for Ageing Justine Elliot says she encourages all older Australians to take part in the Grey Medallion program.

"It's very important that they can learn these skills, or brush up on these skills," she said.

"Also it means that they can improve their overall well-being and health, as well by doing these water-related skills."
