Healthy by Choice or Chance

DEADLY DIETARY HABITS

Two major factors increase our likelihood of succumbing to disease. The first is exposure to toxins and the second, is a lack of good nutrition. While we may not have much control over the level of toxins we are exposed to, we can control what we eat. By far, the most important way to reduce toxicity in your body is through wise dietary choices. The standard Australian diet is loaded with pesticides, artificial sweeteners, chemical preservatives and colourings, genetically modified ingredients, trans fats and more, all of which are poisonous to our bodies. Fats, for example, are a dietary red flag. While we need a certain amount of good quality fat in our diet (especially Omega 3, 6 and 9 fatty acids), eating the wrong type of fat, such as trans fat and saturated fats, can be devastating to health. Trans fat is produced by combining vegetable oils with hydrogen through a process called hydrogenation. The result is a substance that is both foreign and toxic to the body. Trans fats are found in most processed foods...french fries, fried foods, donuts, cookies, pastries. Eating a diet high in trans fats is known to raise LDL, the bad cholesterol, and therefore decrease the HDL or good cholesterol. It also contributes to clog arteries, heart disease and diabetes. The amount of trans fats is now starting to appear on our food labelling practices.... so if a food contains it, leave it off your list.
