Technology is a Time Machine

This month's edition is all about search engines.

1. What are they and what do they do?
2. How to choose your favourite search engine and set it as your home page.

Hello again, and welcome back for our first tutorial in our “Technology Is A Time Machine” workshop.
In this edition we will try and firstly help you to understand what a search engine is, and that not all search
engines are created equal, and secondly show you how to install your favourite search engine as your home page.

Let us start by demystifying the term “Search Engine”. You've probably all heard this term used before but havent quite understood the whole concept behind it.

The Search Engine

A search engine is an online tool we use to quiery the www. (World Wide Web) for information.
The search engine works in conjuction with two different types of information gathering and processing databases. One called the Meta-base and the other the Data-miner.
The Meta-base stores and provides the search engine with information gathered from the Data-miner, who's job it is to search the World Wide Web for the information upon receiving a quiery from the Meta-base, who received the quiery in the first instance from the search engine. The Data-miners are the real workers behind the search engine, these guys search every single web page and very single website on every single web server around the world for the information quieried by the Meta-base,
and in only a few seconds! Once the relevant information is found, the Data-miners pass that information onto the beta-base which then translates it into legible text, sound clip, or streaming video, and passes it onto the search engine for the end user to read, watch or listen to.

How to find a good Search Engine and install it as your Home Page.

The top 4 most popular search engines we found are;

1. Google.com
2. Wikipedia.com
3. MSN.com
4. Yahoo.com

Here's how to find them.

Most of you would be using Internet Explorer as your web browser, thats the little blue e on your desktop screen, click on it, then type in any of the above search engine names in the top right hand corner of the page where it says “search” and has a little picture of a magnifying glass, then press enter... if you typed in Google.com you should see the install Google tool bar at the top of the list, the other search engines will have a similar page with the install instructions at the top of the page also. Once you have decided on your favourite search engine and would like to install it as your home page, just click install, and away you go! This page will load automatically.

You now have a world of information at your finger tips at the click of a button. Log in to next month's edition, for “Technology Is A Time Machine” on tips to setting up a wireless broadband network in your home or office.
