Losing a Loved One

Losing a partner/spouse is very difficult to cope with, the longer the couple have been together, the deeper the void will be. For many, that relationship may have been the one and only truly meaningful relationship they have ever experienced. Their lives will never be the same again.

Coming to terms with the loss is extremely hard and it is important to have people around you who love and care for you and who can be strong enough to give that extra support that is required, even though they too may be grieving.

Grieving is a painful process, but it is something that the person left behind must go through. Talking about the memories that had been shared between the couple is very helpful. The surviving member will have many stories to tell and will probably re-tell them again and again. It is therefore important that someone can listen and share those memories; it is a part of the healing process.

For most their world changes dramatically, hobbies and friends that have always been enjoyed together and a part of their daily life, suddenly become meaningless and unimportant.

For some their Faith will help them through, for others they will need assistance from their friends and family and for others they may need that special help that only a professional can give.

For anyone struggling to re-build their lives on their own, counselling can be a great help. Assisting the person to accept what has happened and helping them to find direction again, encouraging them to adjust in their environment without their loved one and pick up the threads of their life one by one to carry on.

The despair in losing a loved one is never going to be easy; talking to a Professional Counsellor who can offer continued and reliable support in a confidential environment, can be very beneficial to anyone feeling so overwhelmed with grief.

Check the list of Professional Counsellors in your area and give them a call. It will be the first positive step in getting help.
