Understanding Ethics

The twenty-first century confronts us – personally and as a society- with many ethical challenges.
We live in a time when the human capacity to determine what we can do ( our technological proficiencies) has outstripped our ability to decide what we ought to do ( our ethical choices).

The study of ethics has been the province of philosophers and religious teachers and yet ethics is part and parcel of life for everyone. Understanding Ethics is designed to communicate with those who have never studied ethics or philosophy formally. Though it is a basic text used in many University courses, it is aimed at general readers of any age who recognize that ethical decision-making is an important and unavoidable part of human living.

So successful were the first two editions (selling more than 6000 copies in Australia) that a third much expanded and updated edition was released in late 2007 by Federation Press (www.federationpress.com.au ). In an accessible style Understanding Ethics introduces modes of moral reasoning, a decision-making model and, then, in ten of its 14 chapters a wide range of contemporary issues are subjected to ethical examination. The comprehensive discussion engages themes such as the planet and the environment; bioethics; professional life and workplaces; politics and policy-making; , life, love and sexuality; war, terrorism and violence. It concludes with a section, how to cultivate an ethical life, featuring as an epilogue the author’s letter to my grandchildren.

On the back cover the author is described as follows: “Dr Noel Preston AM has combined an academic career with an activist’s life. He has been a prominent grass roots campaigner and commentator in Queensland from the Bjelke-Petersen years to the Beattie era. Previously an Associate Professor at QUT and Director of UnitingCare Queensland Centre for Social Justice, he is currently an Adjunct Professor at Griffith University.”
