Legal Issues

Legal aspects of some common problems which confront many of us in the 50-69 age group.

The Laws we live by are some of the most important rules of our society. Where laws differ from other rules such as morals, ethics and religious values, is in their financial penalties and consequences and, sometimes the constraints they impose through Courts and Tribunals, on our freedoms.

As we and those close to us go through the process of ageing, there are legal rights, obligations, penalties and consequences, which arise from the choices we make. What follows is a description of some of the life events and legal choices which may confront us as we proceed through retirement and the later stages of life.

  • What if I become sick or disabled?
  • Where will I live?
  • What to do if someone in my family enters a nursing home.
  • Dad can't look after himself – but he won’t admit it.
