Mature Age Employment

Our economy is buoyant with major skills shortages in some key areas. Nonetheless, many mature workseekers still face major hurdles getting back into the workforce, or at least being selected for full-time, secure positions at the career level from which they have come.

Many of the causes – ageism, the practices of recruitment companies, small businesses fear of unfair dismissal and myths around the lack of willingness and/or ability of mature workseekers to change and be flexible – have been broadly canvassed. The fact remains, however, that more than 85 per cent of the growth in Australia’s workforce over the next decade will be in the 45 plus age bracket. For those with specifically in-demand skills, the market is robust and maturity is not a disadvantage. But for others, re-connecting with opportunities for employment is fraught with difficulty.

One of the biggest problems is that the employment / recruitment industry is changing remarkably fast.

And few people over the age of 35 understand what’s happening, or how to use it to their advantage. Searching for employment is not really a jobsearch process; it is a marketing and sales process. And what people are marketing and selling is skills and the potential to solve problems for a business and so improve the business bottom line.
