Jobs for Mature Age Workers – 2010

The Australian economy has survived the GFC (Global Financial Crisis) better than most in the western world, with many companies surviving by downsizing and restructuring.  Some businesses have gone from strength to strength regardless of the downturn, it just depends where their business operates.

What does the New Year hold in terms of opportunities for mature age job seekers?

Firstly, statistics are on our side – the population is aging and as such 85% of growth in the workforce will come from the 40 plus age group, at least until 2016 (Labour force projections: 1999-2016 (Oct, 1999)(ABS Catalogue Number 6203.0).

Secondly, even in the face of increasing unemployment levels, there are skill shortages still identified in key areas all around Australia:

  • Professions  - Engineering, Medical, Accounting and Agriculture
  • Trades  - Mechanics, Building trades, Aircraft Maintenance, Bakers and Pastry Cooks, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning and Furniture industries

There are also always opportunities in Hospitality and Tourism, in key areas around the country and now that the mining boom has ‘normalised’, Western Australia is not creating a drain for the rest of the country.  Key skills and professions in Mining are still in demand, but not in quite the panic proportions of 18 months ago.

Thirdly, if you are flexible, opportunities exist in many areas for either casual, part-time or full time employment, depending on your needs – whether financial or work/life balance driven.

Ageism is still an issue in some areas – covert and overt discrimination is still out there.  On the positive side, small to medium businesses realised a while ago that there are enormous benefits in recruiting mature age workers and tend to favour our demographic when looking for team members.

Larger corporations however, are still caught in the ‘youth is better and cheaper’ mind set, with the added effect of some traditional recruitment agents acting as barriers for mature workers to be put forward to companies for selection.

As the economy strengthens into 2010, there will be more and more opportunities for employment and the skill, experience and wisdom of mature age workers will be invaluable to any sized business to re-inforce their growth and consolidation strategies for the next 10 years.
