Volunteering

Here’s a story about a Brisbane Doctor who  has recently volunteered a week of his time to help some aboriginal communities in Cape York. He had a great time and thoroughly recommends the experience to other people.

The Indigenous Community Volunteers Organisation , which organised our doctor’s trip, has lots of interesting jobs for people with a wide range of skills including trades, bookkeeping, medical, administration & finance to name a few. They pay your living expenses while you use your knowledge and experience to assist others. To find out if this could work for you, please call 1800 456 600.

If you’d rather volunteer closer to home, helping Angel Flight might be worth looking at.
Angel Flight is a charity that co-ordinates non-emergency flights for financially and medically needy people. All flights are free and assist patients or compassionate careers travelling to or from medical facilities anywhere in Australia. The pilots donate their time and their aircraft .
When an Angel Flight taking a patient to a city hospital lands, there is a need for volunteers (or Earth Angels)  to meet the plane and transport the patient to the hospital.

If you have some time on your hands, it’s worth thinking seriously about doing some volunteer work. There are obvious benefits for the organisation you decide to help, but there are some very real benefits for you.

Joining other volunteers working on a project of some kind can be a great way to meet new people in a friendly, co operative atmosphere. You benefit by knowing that you’re making a useful contribution to the community and there’s generally a positive feeling of shared effort and teamwork.

As well as the social and community benefits, volunteering gives many people a renewed sense of purpose. It can also be a way to develop your work skills and can lead to some kind of paid work.

There are literally hundreds of organisations where you can work as a volunteer. You could start by asking your local Council’s Community Services Department what local organisations are looking for volunteers. If you get on the web, go to Google and type “volunteering” - you will find plenty of organisations looking for people. We have listed below some web addresses of organisations who can assist you to find some volunteer work. You can even volunteer to work overseas.
